Tips for Making ground beef taco meat
- I like to use ground beef that’s not too lean such as 90/10, otherwise if can dry out, and nobody likes dry tacos!
- If you don’t like ground beef you could substitute it for ground pork or ground turkey instead
- Remember that most packets of taco seasoning contain starches which create a thicker sauce, we have omitted that to keep it low carb but it still tastes great
- The amount of taco seasoning added here is just a guide, if you want more flavor add more seasoning!
What’s the best beef to use for Taco Meat?
Try to use ground beef that’s about 90% lean, any leaner and it’s too dry for my tastes. If you are using 70- 80% lean then you’ll have a lot more fat and probably have to drain some of it out.
I know that’s what most people do, but I hate draining off the fat (as opposed to skimming fat off a sauce or gravy) because I think you’re also pouring some of the flavorful meat juices down the drain too and that’s such a shame.
I’d rather meet in the middle with ground beef that doesn’t need any draining, so for this recipe I used 90/10 ground beef.
What spices are in taco meat seasoning?
My Homemade taco seasoning recipe contains chili powder, cumin, garlic, onion, oregano, paprika, salt, and black pepper. You can adjust the heat by adding more chili powder, and adjust the salt and pepper to taste.
Can I freeze Taco Meat?
My Taco meat recipe can be made ahead of time and frozen, I’d even suggest you make a double batch so you have plenty to use later on.
It can be portioned out and frozen in suitable freezer safe containers where it should be good for about three months. It can be thawed over night in the fridge, or in your microwave if you are short of time.
It will keep in the fridge for up to three days.
